Integrating ISO/IEC 20000, ISO 9001 & ISO 27001 for IT Service Management

For IT departments and managed-service providers, three standards keep coming up: ISO/IEC 20000 for IT service management, ISO 9001 for quality management, and ISO/IEC 27001 for information security. Pursued separately, they mean three sets of documentation, three audit cycles and three project teams. Pursued together, they reinforce each other into a single system that delivers reliable, secure, high-quality services — which is exactly what customers are buying.

This article explains why these three standards belong together and how to integrate them without drowning your team in paperwork.

What Each Standard Covers

  • ISO/IEC 20000 (Service Management): The requirements for a service management system (SMS) — service levels, incident and problem management, change and release management, capacity and continuity. It is closely aligned with ITIL practices.
  • ISO 9001 (Quality): The general quality management framework — customer focus, process control, corrective action and continual improvement that underpins consistent delivery.
  • ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security): The requirements for an information security management system (ISMS) — risk assessment, Annex A controls, and protection of confidentiality, integrity and availability.

The overlap is obvious once you see it: you cannot deliver a good IT service (20000) that isn't consistent and well-run (9001) or that isn't secure (27001). Customers increasingly expect all three at once.

Why Integration Works: A Shared Framework

ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001 both use the Harmonized Structure (formerly Annex SL / the High-Level Structure) — the same top-level clauses for context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. ISO/IEC 20000 shares this same architecture, so all three can share a single management-system core.

That means one context analysis, one leadership and policy layer, one risk-based planning process, one internal audit program, one management review and one improvement process — with service-specific, quality-specific and security-specific content added only where the standards genuinely differ.

The Benefits for IT Service Providers

1. One system, not three. Shared document control, audits, corrective action and management review eliminate duplication and the contradictory procedures that creep in when teams work in silos.

2. Security and service quality reinforce each other. ISO 27001 risk assessment feeds directly into ISO/IEC 20000 continuity and availability planning; a security incident is also a service incident, so integrated incident management handles both coherently.

3. Stronger competitive position. Winning enterprise and public-sector contracts increasingly requires demonstrable security (27001) and service maturity (20000). Holding all three tells prospects you deliver services that are consistent, secure and continually improving.

4. Combined audits, less disruption. An integrated system supports combined internal and certification audits, so your teams prepare once and auditors assess shared clauses once.

5. Clear, unified metrics. Service levels, quality objectives and security KPIs live in one performance-evaluation process, giving leadership a single view of how the operation is really performing.

How to Integrate Them

Start with a gap analysis mapping your current practices against all three standards to find the common ground and the genuine differences. Build a shared core — policy, roles, risk method, document control, audit, management review and improvement — then add the service management processes (SLAs, incident/problem/change), the quality processes, and the ISMS risk treatment and Annex A controls as modules on top.

The hard part is rarely the documentation — it's building a team that understands how service management, quality and security interlock. That's a training and competence challenge. Our certification programs, including ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 information security, give your people the auditing and implementation skills an integrated IT management system relies on.

Getting Started

If you already hold one of these standards, adding the others is far easier than starting from scratch — the shared framework does much of the work. Train a core team across the standards you hold and plan to add, then let them lead the integration. Use our course finder to choose the right starting point, and our team and enterprise options to certify your whole department cost-effectively.
